Anyone who knows us personally knows that we are full time Mums to three beautiful kids between us as well as business owners. We are highly passionate and protective of both our personal and business lives and some of our natural skills, experience and ability overlap. This got us thinking…
There are many transferable skills we use at home and in business, and this is true of the majority of business owners who are also parents.
Here are 4 ways being a parent can help your business.
Do you believe you can’t manage your time? Think again. After years of night feeds, school runs, organising a household and making sure no one starves, you have become amazing at time management. This can also be transferred to your business. Sit down and have a think about how you work best at home. Do you love a good list to keep you on track? Do you set timers to know when you need to move from one thing to the next? Think about how you can apply these methods to running your business and effectively managing your time.
Regardless of how much leadership experience you have in the workplace, when you became a parent you also became the most important leader in the world. Your little ones look up to you and you are a strong and positive role model to them. You are a leader, role model and mentor all rolled into one. Again, use this experience to apply yourself as a strong leader in your business.
When your children wobbled and fell when they began to learn to walk, did you cheer them on from the side-lines telling them over and over they can do it? Or did you tell them that they had failed and should give up?
As a business owner, talk to yourself the same way as you would talk to your children, with love and encouragement. Have you really failed or do you need to dust yourself off, give yourself a pep talk and try again?
How many times have you sat back and thought about your child’s future? What will they achieve with their life? Where will they go? How will they learn and grow to shape themselves into the adults of the future? You might not realise it but you are always planning ahead with your children’s lives. How much do you need to save for their future? What will they eat for the rest of the week? This is an example of another transferrable skill you can use in business to plan out the future of your business and where you want it to go.
Can you think of any other ways being a parent sets you up for life as a business owner? We would love to hear your thoughts on this. Add them on our Facebook post here.
